Project Update

Duke Energy announced the results of the route selection study in June 2025.

Segments EK and BG are the preferred transmission routes to be built in and out of the new Turfway Substation. Duke Energy representatives or vendors will be accessing the proposed route corridors for impacted landowners shortly after the public announcement to conduct further studies for this project.

Project Overview

Duke Energy is making important investments to serve the energy needs of Boone County – one of the fastest-growing counties in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Turfway Reliability Project will install a new substation on Duke Energy property at 7650 Turfway Road in Florence, Ky., to support the growing development in the area. The new substation will be served from two new 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines to be built in and out of the new substation. The transmission line portion of the project will undergo a regulatory filing.

  • Enhance our ability to continue providing safe and reliable energy to homes, schools, hospitals and businesses

  • Improve our ability to reroute power during planned and unplanned outages, which also supports restoration following extreme weather events

  • Strengthen the resilience of the electric system and allow more flexibility for providing critical energy to the community

  • Provide a robust system for supplying and delivering electric service helps to promote continued economic growth

Project Timeline*

Construction is expected to begin in 2028 and be completed by 2029. Here’s a look at typical planning and activities.

  • Late Spring 2025: Preferred route announcement
