Disston Transmission Line Upgrade

Disston Transmission Line Upgrade

Current Project Activities

Crews are continuing construction of the underground transmission line on 40th St. N with most of the work during July occurring between 16th Ave. N and 26th Ave.  Work on the remaining portions is expected to continue until mid-fall up to 38th Ave. N. There are construction-related activities in other parts of the project area along with micro-tunneling in the 4400 block of 54th Ave N. Micro tunneling is used in high-traffic areas where open-trench construction is not possible.

Following the completion of the underground work, restoration and clean-up activities are scheduled for late 2025 through mid-2026.

Street and lane closures are required for the safety of the public and crews during construction of the new line. As you drive in the area of the work zones, please observe all signage and crew instructions for traveling in areas of active construction.

  • Proceed slowly and remain alert
  • Watch for workers and equipment
  • Travel in a cautious, calm and courteous manner

Project Overview

Pinellas County is experiencing rapid growth and an increasing need for energy. Duke Energy is investing to improve the energy grid in the county. The project will upgrade an existing 3.5-mile underground transmission line from our Disston Substation on 62nd Ave. N. to our 40th Street Substation on 13th Ave. S. The project is one of several projects in the county designed to help ensure continued reliability and meet the growing demand for electricity used by homes, businesses and the community.
