Wildwood Heights Substation and Underground Line

Wildwood Heights Substation and Underground Line
Current Project Activities
Project Overview
Project Details
- The substation will be located on a 1.75-acre parcel at 1295 28th St. in St. Petersburg.
- An approximately 1/4-mile underground transmission line will connect the new substation along 13th Avenue South to the existing transmission to the west.
- The new substation is a gas-insulated technology, a modern design where the equipment is safely enclosed inside a building compared to typical outdoor substations.
- This type of substation is more compact and requires less land to build, offering aesthetic benefits by being housed in a structure that can be designed to blend into the community.

What to Expect During Construction
The first phase of construction will involve removing any vegetation, structures or other obstructions on the substation site and in the road to allow safe access for crews and equipment during construction.
Neighbors can expect construction equipment such as cranes, excavation equipment, trucks and concrete mixers in the project area. Security lighting and fencing may be used during construction.
The installation of underground facilities and substations is challenging and complex. The 1/4-mile power line will be located underground in road right of way.
During the construction of the line, there will be excavation of the corridor/road to allow for the installation of the new underground line. Maintenance vaults and manholes will be installed along the underground transmission line route. Following construction, the roadway will be repaved and properties will be restored as closely as possible to their original conditions. The line will not be visible above ground, and equipment will be maintained through the underground vaults.
Appropriate safety protocols will be followed, and work zones will be clearly marked. It will be important for the public to avoid work zones and drive slowly in areas where crews are working.
