  • Savings will vary depending on type of lamp (i.e. CFL, LED), cost of electricity, bulb lifespan and hours of operation. ENERGY STAR® qualified lightbulbs pay for themselves in about six months. Then they begin paying you back. Change one bulb, and save about $80 over the lifetime of the bulb. Change five bulbs, and save about $400 over the lifetime of the bulbs.

If every American home replaced just one lightbulb with an ENERGY STAR® qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 640,000 vehicles.

  • You should place your energy-efficient bulbs in high-use areas, where the light will be on four hours or more a day.

  • The brand type will vary depending on bulb type, but all bulbs are ENERGY STAR® certified.

  • Virtually all components of a fluorescent bulb can be recycled. CFLs and other fluorescent lightbulbs contain very small amounts of mercury, so it is important to recycle them at the end of their lifespan. Many retailers recycle CFLs for free, and some municipalities have special recycling programs for CFLs. Please visit the EPA website for suggestions on recycling CFLs.

  • Do not dispose of mercury-containing thermostats in the local landfill or local incinerator. It is very important that you dispose of them in an approved Thermostat Recycling Corporation bin for recycling. The service is FREE, and you can find a location near you at
