Frequently Asked Questions

  • Usage Alerts is a free and optional service automatically provided to eligible Duke Energy customers with one smart meter at their location, an email address on file, and at least two weeks of electricity usage history. If you do not have an email address on file with Duke Energy, simply log in or contact us to add one. Please note that customers participating in other Duke Energy programs (e.g., Equal Payment Plan, Budget Billing, Net Metering, etc.) may not be eligible to participate in Usage Alerts. Eligible customers will automatically be sent a Mid-cycle Alert halfway through their billing cycle each month with their estimated electricity to date, projected amount for the rest of the month and also have the option to receive Budget Alerts in addition to or instead of the default Mid-cycle Alerts. Additionally, customers will receive appliance breakdown estimates for their home to provide more insight into their electricity usage.
  • The projected costs in your Mid-cycle Usage Alert are based on the last two to six weeks of electricity usage prior to the date your alert was sent. This amount may differ from your final monthly bill as it does not include any taxes or fees. The data for your usage is collected from the smart meter at your location in two- to six-week intervals. The Mid-cycle Alert will also include estimated usage breakdown by appliance. Learn more about how appliance breakdown works.

  • You can modify your Usage Alert preferences directly from the alert itself. Simply open the most recent Usage Alert you’ve received and select the Manage My Usage Alerts button to adjust your settings. You will be able to opt in to receive text messages. You may enter up to two mobile phone numbers to receive alerts. A text message will be sent to the primary phone number listed asking you to confirm your request to receive Usage Alert text messages. Simply text back "Y" to confirm enrollment.
  • You have several options on how to receive Usage Alerts. Learn more about how appliance breakdown works.
  • To add or edit your contact information for Usage Alerts, simply open the most recent Usage Alert you’ve received and select the Manage My Usage Alerts button. You can add up to two email addresses and two phone numbers for Usage Alerts. Budget Alerts are customized alerts that you can set up to receive emails or text messages when your projected cost is expected to hit certain threshold amounts that you specify. A Budget Alert helps keep you informed when your bill is expected to reach a specific dollar amount you choose, allowing you to course-correct and cut back on your usage if you wish. The alert will notify you when your electricity cost has reached 75 and 100 percent of a set dollar amount that you choose. Set up your Budget Alerts by clicking the Manage My Usage Alerts button in your Mid-cycle Alert.
  • If you no longer wish to receive alerts regarding your usage, you have the option to unsubscribe by selecting the Manage Preferences button in the alert itself. If you are receiving text message alerts and would like to stop receiving them, simply reply “STOP” to your alert or send a new text − “STOP” − to 78136. More details are available in the program’s Terms of Use.
  • If you unsubscribed from Usage Alerts and would like to start receiving them again, open a past email alert and select the Manage My Usage Alerts button to re-enroll. If you received Usage Alerts via text message, you can either text “RESUME” to 78136 or select the link in your text message to open the alert and select the Manage My Usage Alerts button to re-enroll. Please note that the link will only work if it is accessed within 30 days of its receipt. For your security, text message links will also expire 30 days from receipt. If you need help re-enrolling, feel free to contact us.
  • Duke Energy customers who are eligible for Usage Alerts are automatically enrolled in the program to receive the Mid-cycle Alert via email. Unless you specify otherwise or have unsubscribed from the program, you should continue to receive an email alert each month halfway through your billing cycle.

If you notice you are no longer receiving Usage Alerts and have not taken action to unsubscribe, it could be because your account has become ineligible and was removed from the program. An account may become ineligible for Usage Alerts if: you have more than one active smart meter installed at your location, you no longer have an active smart meter at your location, or you participate in another Duke Energy program that conflicts with Usage Alerts (such as Equal Payment Plan, Fixed Payment Plan, Budget Billing, Net Metering or Duke Energy Prepaid Advantage). If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
