Medically Essential Program

Medically Essential is a Duke Energy program that recognizes our customers who have special medical needs. This program was created to help ensure careful handling of accounts where the disconnection of electric service for a past-due bill could adversely affect the well-being of an occupant. To help ensure sensitive handling of Medically Essential customers subject to disconnection for nonpayment, indicators will be placed on their accounts and meter.

Participation in the program does not mean that your power will not be disconnected for nonpayment or interrupted due to an outage. Please view our disconnection procedures for more information.

In addition, when there is a major outage, participation does not mean that you will be the first to have power restored. Customers with medical needs should make preparations in advance for extended outages due to storms or other causes.

Medically Essential Requirements
Medically Essential may be assigned to a customer’s account if a member of the customer’s household is chronically or seriously ill, handicapped or on a life support system.
