As part of Duke Energy's commitment to providing safe, reliable natural gas service to 438,000 customers in southwest Ohio, the company continually evaluates the need to replace older pipelines in its natural gas delivery system. Much of the utility infrastructure in downtown Cincinnati, such as water and sewer lines, has been upgraded over the past several years. Similar to that work, Duke Energy must replace one of its pipelines. In early 2020, the company will begin a natural gas pipeline replacement project on Fourth Street. This new pipeline will help ensure natural gas reliability in the central business district for decades to come.
The Fourth Street project involves the replacement of 1.2 miles of steel pipe as well as nearby gas mains. The construction contract was awarded to KS Energy. The construction will generally move block by block, from east to west, starting on Sixth Street near Sycamore and ending on Central Avenue. Most of the work will occur on Fourth Street between Central Avenue and Broadway Street, as shown in the map below. Gas mains will also be replaced at the intersections of:
All construction will occur in the city right of way/street. Duke Energy recognizes this project will cause inconveniences and lane closures, but we will make every effort to minimize the impact to downtown workers, residents and visitors. For example, work will not occur during rush hours (7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.). Construction is expected to begin in January 2020 and be complete in August 2020.
Duke Energy is committed to working with the city of Cincinnati and customers along the project route throughout construction. Detailed lane closure information will be updated on Cincinnati's Department of Transportation webpage (www.roadmapcincy.com) each week. As work progresses, we will also mail notification postcards to customers before work begins on their block so they are aware of the schedule and reminded of what to expect.
