Staying safe around downed power lines

Staying safe around downed power lines
5 essential tips to stay safe from a distance.
At Duke Energy, we're all about keeping you safe, especially when it comes to downed power lines after a storm or accident. It's tough to tell if a downed line is live or not, so knowing how to react can make a big difference. Let's dive into some essential tips to help you stay safe and protect those around you.
Here’s what to do if you come across a downed power line:
-
Always assume it’s live
Downed power lines can be extremely dangerous and may still be carrying high-voltage currents. Even if they appear to be out or aren’t sparking, they can still pose a significant risk. -
Stay back – at least 30 feet
Maintain a safe distance from downed power lines and avoid touching anything in contact with them. Electrical currents can jump, and wet ground or standing water can cause currents to travel even farther from the line, making the potential danger zone even larger. Do not drive over downed power lines. -
Warn others nearby
Alert others of the danger and urge them to stay away from the area. Remember, don’t try to physically move anyone who might be too close to the line – it’s all about staying safe from a distance. -
Report the hazard
Report all power line hazards to Duke Energy or contact your local emergency services department or agency. -
If a line falls on your car, stay inside
Stay calm if a power line falls on your vehicle. Call 911 and remain inside, as the rubber tires insulate you from the electricity. Only exit if there's an immediate danger like a fire, and jump clear with both feet together.
Following these safety tips can help prevent injuries from downed power lines. Stay aware and act wisely to keep yourself and your community safe. Let's make power line safety a part of our everyday habits.
