Planning and Implementation
Connor Belair, VP of engineering for Meridian Yarn, discovered the advantages of utilizing Duke Energy’s incentive programs – SmartPath® and Smart $aver® – and how he could save money and receive incentives for qualifying energy efficiency projects. Duke Energy’s Business Energy Advisor worked closely with Meridian to map out potential savings for the company. Belair realized that this would be a great option for making needed upgrades – and getting valuable incentives to help significantly offset project costs.Meridian’s critical equipment was reaching the end of its life cycle, resulting in costly repairs as parts became less available. They decided to focus on their largest energy consuming equipment – process chilled water, compressed air and lighting. Through the SmartPath® program, Meridian was able to upgrade fluorescent lighting to LED lighting through a Trade Ally Total Energy Claim. Meridian also replaced a single-speed air compressor with a state-of-the-art VFD air compressor and a cycling refrigerated dryer. “Duke Energy’s support and the financial incentives provided were crucial to the success of these projects. I don’t think I would have done this without Duke Energy’s assistance,” said Belair.
Results
These projects have made a huge difference to Meridian, helping them reach their sustainability goals. So far, the upgrades have helped Meridian stay competitive in the global market, get over $150,000 in incentives and reduce 1,097,271 million kWh of energy consumption. These results have earned Meridian the Duke Energy Business Energy Excellence (BEE) Award, which is awarded to business customers who have committed to energy efficiency.Contact Us
