Planned Outages

What Is a Planned Outage?

Periodically, Duke Energy must manually interrupt electrical service to perform maintenance, complete repairs or make system upgrades to our equipment.

These planned power outages are necessary to enable our crews to work as safely and efficiently as possible. We make every effort to inform all affected customers in advance of the scheduled interruption by phone, email or text. Occasionally an emergent issue will arise that may not allow for advance notification, but you may see a "planned outage" indicator. In those instances, estimated times of restoration should be available.

Common reasons for a planned outage include but are not limited to:

  • Tree trimming and vegetation maintenance
  • Electrical grid upgrades
  • Pole repairs or replacement
  • Substation enhancements
  • Overhead line to underground conversion
  • Underground line repair or replacement

If weather or other unforeseen conditions prevent crews from performing the planned work, we may reschedule the outage for another day, depending on the circumstance. You will be re-notified when that work is scheduled.
