Duke Energy is working to improve reliability, reduce outages, and strengthen the power grid in your community against severe weather and prepare our system to serve the growing area. As part of this commitment, we are conducting a yearlong project in the Swansboro Community.

Project Details
We’re upgrading our electrical infrastructure within Swansboro. The map below indicates streets where most of the work will take place. The primary objective of this work is to:- Strengthen the power grid to avoid power outages: Upgrading power lines, poles and essential equipment.
- Help improve reliability and reduce outage time: Installing smart, self-healing technology that automatically detects power outages and quickly reroutes power to restore service faster.

Current Work and Timeline
- Replace aging transformers
- Increasing capacity with wire upgrades (overhead and underground) and power regulating equipment installation
- Install smart monitoring gear for faster outage response
- Start: August 2025
- Estimated Completion: August 2026
Project Updates
Throughout the project, customers can expect:
- Potential road closures
- Access, as needed, to their property to perform maintenance and upgrade overhead wires
- Potential night and weekend work
- Limited planned outages may be needed. Customers will be notified in advance should a temporary outage be necessary
- Construction equipment and work crews will be present and will carry identification
- Routine vegetation trimming and/or removal necessary for safe and reliable operation of the electric system
- Restoration of areas as close as possible to previous conditions after grid improvement work is completed
