Pool Energy Efficiency Program

If you have a single-speed pool pump, or your pump is more than seven years old, installing an ENERGY STAR® qualified variable-speed pool pump will help you lower your monthly bills and use less energy. And, we’ll help you pay for it.

When you install an ENERGY STAR® certified variable-speed pool pump:

  • You get a $300 rebate
  • It pays for itself in less than two years
  • You can save up to $340 each year in energy costs*
  • And it makes your pool cleaner, with less maintenance

Switching to a more energy-efficient
pool pump can save you big.

Did you know that inefficient, single-speed pool pumps account for up to 20 percent of a home’s total annual energy usage?* Only your central air conditioner uses more electricity in the summertime.

Cut your pool energy use in half by installing a variable-speed pool pump. With the Smart $aver® Pool Energy Efficiency program, the benefits add up.

Eligibility requirements

  • You must be an electric service customer residing in a single-family residence with a new or existing in-ground swimming pool. Customers living in apartments and multifamily homes are not eligible at this time.
  • Your new variable-speed pool pump must be installed by a participating contractor and operable before you submit your rebate application.
  • Your participating contractor will fill out and submit the rebate application within 90 days of the installation. Once we receive it, you will get your rebate within four to six weeks.
Why variable-speed
pool pumps are so efficient
Variable-speed pool pumps work at the minimum speed necessary to clean your pool. This means they use less energy, make less noise, last longer and actually filter your water more thoroughly.

Frequently asked questions

What are the estimated savings?

According to ENERGY STAR, certified variable-speed pool pumps can save the average household up to $340 per year on electric bills compared to a standard single-speed pump. Larger pools with larger pool pump motors will save even more. Depending upon the number of months you operate your swimming pool, your savings could be even greater.

How about maintenance?

Regular annual maintenance is still recommended. However, because variable-speed pool pumps use totally-enclosed, fan-cooled motors, they are not as susceptible to dirt and moisture. Please review the manufacturer's operating and installation instructions, or ask your participating contractor for maintenance instructions.

How do I apply for an incentive?

After your participating contractor completes the work, he or she will submit your application. Once we receive it, you will get your rebate within four to six weeks.

Do all variable-speed pool pumps qualify?

ENERGY STAR certifies both multi-speed and variable-speed residential in-ground pool pumps ranging in size from ½ horsepower up to 4 horsepower. To meet the Energy Star specification, the pool pump must have an Energy Factor (EF) - a measure of efficiency - of 3.8 or greater. At this time, all variable-speed pool pumps do meet the minimum Energy Factor rating of 3.8 and qualify for Duke Energy’s rebate. Single-speed pool pumps will not meet the Energy Star specification and therefore do not qualify for our rebate.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the rebate?

To be eligible, you must be a Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Ohio, Duke Energy Indiana, or Duke Energy Kentucky customer who owns or is the builder of a single-family residence with a new or existing in-ground swimming pool. Variable-speed pump must be for main water filtration of pool, and the pump must be installed by one of our participating contractors.

What is a participating contractor?

Each participating contractor is a local professional who has met Duke Energy’s requirements. Only these participating contractors are approved to perform work eligible for Duke Energy Smart $aver® program rebates.

Duke Energy reserves the right to revise program requirements and incentive levels at any time. Incentives are subject to availability. For questions not addressed on the website, call 866.785.6209.
