W. C. Beckjord Station

Retirement: 2014
Capacity: 1.433-GW
Location: New Richmond, Ohio
Commercial Date: 1952
Status: Retired

The W.C. Beckjord Station, located southeast of Cincinnati, began generating electricity in 1952, serving customers well for many decades.

As environmental regulations evolved and new equipment upgrades were required to continue to produce electricity for customers, Duke Energy Ohio announced the decision to retire the six-unit power plant in July 2011. Unit 1 was retired in 2012; units 2 and 3 in 2013; and, units 4, 5 and 6 in 2014. The four oil-fired combustion turbine units on the site were also retired in 2014.

The company has begun a multiyear process to decommission the retired units and will eventually return the power plant footprint to ground-level. Certain substation and transmission or distribution electrical equipment will remain on site and in operation as well as a battery storage unit .
