Capacity: 316 megawatts
Location: Moncure, North Carolina
Commercial Date: 1923

The Cape Fear Plant was located near Moncure, N.C., and began commercial operation in 1923. In its day, the Cape Fear Plant was the largest power plant on the Duke Energy Progress system and one of the largest in the region.

Two of the site's six coal-fired units were retired in 1977 and two in 2011. The remaining two coal-fired units, along with one of four oil-fueled combustion turbine units on site, were retired in October 2012, ending more than 90 years of power generation at the site. Demolition of the plant site was completed in 2017 through a combination of implosions and mechanical removal of plant structures.
