Senior Vice President
and Chief Security Officer

Keith Butler is senior vice president and chief security officer for Duke Energy. He is responsible for the company's cyber and physical security, threat management and emergency planning functions. Additionally, he coordinates with peer utilities to ensure that our country's critical infrastructure, information and energy grid remain well protected. He assumed his current role in December 2020.
Previously, Butler served as senior vice president and chief risk officer for Duke Energy. He was responsible for corporate risk management, with a particular focus on the company's market, credit, operational and strategic risks. In addition, he managed the company's insurance programs. Since May 2020, Butler also served as the company's acting chief ethics and compliance officer, responsible for fostering an accountable, transparent and ethical culture across the enterprise.
Butler joined Duke Power in 1984 in the controller's department. After a series of promotions in various accounting and finance areas, he joined Duke Energy's unregulated power plant development subsidiary in 1989, where he was responsible for developing and operating projects in the United States, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. He was named vice president of Duke Energy Corp. in 1994.
Butler has more than 35 years of extensive leadership abilities and expertise in regulated and unregulated energy markets, both internationally and in the United States. In February 1998, he was named senior vice president and chief financial officer of Duke Energy Global and its affiliated companies: Duke Energy Power Services LLC, Duke Energy International LLC and Duke Energy Industrial Asset Development LLC. He was named senior vice president and chief financial officer of Duke Energy North America in July 1998 and appointed chief operating officer of Duke Solutions in September 1999. He was named vice president and controller of Duke Energy in August 2001, and in December 2006, Butler was named senior vice president of tax, leading all aspects of the company's domestic and international tax functions.
A native of Greensboro, N.C., Butler earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a certified public accountant. In 2010, he completed the Advanced Management Program at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business. In 2017, Butler completed the Risk for Corporate Executives program at Harvard's Business School for Executive Education. Most recently, he served on the Enterprise Risk Management Initiative Advisory Board for the Poole College of Management at N.C. State University, where he earned the designation of an N.C. State Enterprise Risk Management Fellow. Butler also served as a member of the Strategic Risk Council of the Conference Board. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Butler chaired and continues to serve on the board of directors of MeckEd, a nonprofit education advocacy group. He is a board member of the Community Culinary School of Charlotte and a member of the Finance Council of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Charlotte. He formerly served as the board chair for Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region and the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross. Butler was born in 1960. He and his wife, Anne, have two daughters.
