George Hamrick
Senior Vice President and
Chief Transmission Officer
George Hamrick serves as senior vice president and chief transmission officer for Duke Energy. He oversees the safe, reliable and efficient operation of Duke Energy's electric transmission system, which includes over 32,000 miles of high-voltage power lines and more than 3,000 substations in six states.
Before assuming his current position in July 2020, Hamrick served as senior vice president of Duke Energy's coal combustion products (CCP) organization. In this role, he was responsible for leading the operations, maintenance, engineering, project management, governance and oversight functions to safely operate, develop and implement closure plans for Duke Energy's coal ash basins. The CCP organization is also responsible for overseeing multiple engineering and construction projects to transition to dry handling of all dry and bottom ash. He served in this role since October 2014.
Hamrick has more than 30 years of experience in the energy industry. He joined Duke Power in 1983 as an engineer at Oconee Nuclear Station in Seneca, S.C. He has served as the site vice president at three nuclear generating facilities operated by Duke Energy – Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, N.C., Harris Nuclear Plant in New Hill, N.C., and Catawba Nuclear Station in York, S.C. While at each location, he directed station and facilities management, operations, maintenance, chemistry and radiation protection, engineering, nuclear and industrial safety, and business operations. He has also held positions in Duke Energy's corporate operations and nuclear services.
A native of Shelby, N.C., Hamrick graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and from North Carolina State University with a Master of Science degree in chemical engineering. He has completed the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations senior nuclear plant management course and received his Duke Energy technical nuclear certification.
Hamrick and his wife, the former Stephanie Tober of Trenton, Mich., have one son.
