Duke Energy plans to build a new 115-kilovolt/13-kilovolt (kV) transmission substation at the corner of 13th Avenue S and 4th Street S to enhance the energy supply in the greater St. Petersburg, Fla., area using state-of-the-art technology. This investment will provide long-term reliability to the transmission grid in the Gulf Coast area of Florida and support eventual retirement of the existing Bayboro facility.

A GIS Substation is a high voltage substation in which the major structures are contained in a sealed environment with sulfur hexafluoride gas as the insulating medium.
