Hillcrest Solar Interconnect Project

Transmission Investments

Reliability is a responsibility that Duke Energy Ohio takes very seriously. We are working on building a smarter energy future, which includes upgrading the electric transmission system in Brown County.

As part of our continuous assessment of the electric system, Duke Energy Ohio has identified the need to install a 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line from the Hillcrest Solar Farm under construction in Mount Orab to the nearby existing Hillcrest Substation at 4315 Greenbush East Road.

Project Need

There presently is no transmission line connection for the Hillcrest Solar Farm, which is being built to serve the electric transmission system – a complex network that carries energy over long distances to serve the community’s energy needs.

The anticipated electricity generated at the Hillcrest Solar Farm will supply the existing transmission lines that exit the Duke Energy Ohio substation. Without the proposed 138-kV interconnect to the existing substation, the Hillcrest Solar Farm would have no process for the transmission of renewable electricity from the solar farm to the existing transmission lines in the vicinity of the solar farm.

Project Description

The project involves the installation of approximately 100 feet (0.02 mile) of 138-kV single-circuit electrical transmission line. The project is located entirely on Duke Energy Ohio property in Brown County, Ohio. The interconnection will involve installing the new 138-kV conductor from a Hillcrest Solar Farm steel structure outside the Duke Energy Ohio’s Hillcrest Substation to an existing steel structure within the substation. The structure within the substation is 58 feet tall, and the Hillcrest Solar Farm interconnect structure outside the substation is 52 feet tall.

The construction for the new transmission line is scheduled to begin in August 2020 and to be completed by September 2020.

A notice to construct, operate and maintain this project is now pending before the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) in Columbus, Ohio.
