A new substation, located at 4811 Wade Nash Road, is currently under construction. In addition, a 115-kilovolt (kV) transmission line and associated structures will be removed from the utility right of way near the Park Grove, Springhill and Ashford Village neighborhoods.
Project Need
The towns of Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs have experienced tremendous growth over the past 10 years, and they continue to develop. Increasing the number of substations in the region improves reliability and helps meet growing energy demands.
The Fuquay Wade Nash 115-kilovolt substation is needed to meet the growing energy needs of our customers.
The substation will connect to an existing transmission line located off Lightwater Lane, adjacent to the substation property.
The substation is expected to be operational in early 2020.
To provide visual screening of the substation, especially for nearby homes, a soil berm will be built, and significant landscaping will be added.

aerial line drawing of the substation.
Please note these drawings are for illustrative purposes only. Exact plantings will be based on the approved landscape plan and professional landscaping guidance.
Transmission Line Removal
Transmission poles and overhead transmission lines currently running through the Springhill subdivision – from the corner of Lightwater and Stobhill lanes to Old Powell Road and across Broad Street to the Fuquay Guilford Mills 115-kilovolt substation – will be removed in three phases. The Fuquay Guilford Mills substation, located at 4514 Old Powell Road, will also be removed.
Phase I
- Beginning Jan. 7, 2019, crews will stage equipment to remove the transmission lines and dismantle the transmission structures along Old Powell Road.
- First the transmission line will be cut on the opposite side of Highway 55, then lowered and removed. Please note: Highway 55 will be closed for a short time to remove the line.
- Two structures along Old Powell Road (closest to Highway 55 and adjacent to Park Grove) will then be dismantled and removed. A third structure closest to Stobhill Lane will be removed in Phase II.
Phase II
- Work will move into the Springhill neighborhood during this phase.
- First the transmission line will be cut, then lowered and removed.
- The remaining structure along Old Powell Road will be dismantled and removed along with three neighborhood structures between Old Powell Road and Lightwater Lane.
Phase III
- During the third phase, we will remove the line from Highway 55 to the substation located adjacent to the old Guilford Mills property.
- First the line will be cut, then lowered and removed.
- The three structures along Old Powell Road near Ashford Village will be dismantled and removed.
- The Guilford Mills substation will also be dismantled this winter (2019).
What to Expect
- Safety is our greatest priority. In the neighborhoods, a safety perimeter will be marked along the work zone. It's very important to keep children, pets and others out of the work zone. Please do not enter the work zone at any time.
- Skilled contractors will work during daylight hours, and no interruption to your power is expected during this project.
- It is critical that our workers have safe, unobstructed access to the right of way. Please do not park vehicles along the work zone, and remove any personal belongings from the right of way. These areas will be marked prior to work beginning.
- Neighbors should anticipate short street or lane closures, including a short closure of Highway 55 during Phase I. We are coordinating these closures with the Fuquay-Varina Police Department and will manage closures to minimize effects to commuters and school releases.
- Environmental mats will be placed in some areas to minimize effects to turf, sidewalks and curbing. If vegetation is damaged because of this work, it will be replaced and the area repaired once deconstruction is completed.
- Each phase of work is expected to take about two weeks. However, rain or inclement weather could cause delays.
Once the line removal is completed, a new structure will be built to tie to the new substation on Wade Nash Road. The new line, which will be installed February through May of 2019, will cross Lightwater Lane to the substation.
Project to Date
The early stages of the clearing and grading work began this summer and will continue throughout 2018 and into early 2019.
The Town of Fuquay-Varina Board of Adjustment approved Duke Energy's application on Feb. 13, 2017.
