Transmission Investments
Our goal at Duke Energy is to provide affordable and dependable electricity every day to southwest Ohio. As part of our continuous evaluation of the electric system, we’ve identified a need to separate a small section of a 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line and a 69-kV transmission line and equipment that share the same pole. The project is located near the intersection of Pleasant Avenue and Wessel Drive in the city of Fairfield, Ohio.
The project is classified as an emergent or priority reliability project.
The pole to support the 138-kV transmission line will be steel and installed about 10.5 feet east and 3 feet north of the present pole. The new pole will be about 72.5 feet above ground – about 4 feet taller than the present construction. The base diameter of the new pole is around 26 inches.
An additional steel pole will be installed to again hold both the 138-kV and 69-kV transmission lines without the switching equipment that called for the separation. The new pole will be 72.5 feet above ground and installed approximately 3 feet to the south of the present wood pole location.
Duke Energy Ohio is proposing vegetation clearing for this project to begin in September 2021. Construction is planned for later September 2021 through October 2021, followed with restoration of the disturbed area through late fall.
A notice to construct, operate and maintain this electric transmission line project is now pending before the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) in Columbus, Ohio. View the copy of the notice here. A paper copy will be provided upon request. To obtain a paper copy, please contact 888.827.5116.
Project Need
The new pole for the 69-kV transmission line will be installed with a new air-break switch that operates to serve the distribution network that supplies energy to homes, schools, hospitals and businesses. The separation of the two transmission lines at this location will address modern standards for the new equipment to improve reliability. The project is classified as an emergent or priority reliability project.
Project Description
The existing single wooden utility pole will be replaced with two steel poles – one for the 69-kV line and switch and the other for the 138-kV transmission pole. The new 69-kV transmission pole will be steel and will be installed approximately 4 feet west and 3 feet north of the present pole location. The new structure will be about 76 feet above ground, which is about 4.7 feet taller than the present pole. The base diameter of the pole will measure about 26 inches. The pole to support the 138-kV transmission line will be steel and installed about 10.5 feet east and 3 feet north of the present pole.
