What is the Appliance Recycling program?

Duke Energy's Appliance Recycling program can help you save energy and money by taking your extra fridge or freezer off your hands. Our recycling partner, JACO Environmental, will pick up your appliance for free and take it to be recycled. Then we'll send you $30.

When you recycle your old refrigerator or freezer, 95 percent of its components are reused, and the toxins and ozone-destroying gases from the foam insulation are disposed of safely.

Who is JACO Environmental?

JACO Environmental is one of the country's largest appliance recyclers. The company works with utilities in 26 states and recycles over 400,000 appliances each year.

Once an appliance arrives at a JACO recycling center, it is totally deconstructed. Most of the components are recycled. What can't be recycled is carefully disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

Why does Duke Energy offer the Appliance Recycling program?

The goal of the Appliance Recycling program is to remove older, inefficient appliances from the power grid. By switching to energy efficient appliances, customers can use less energy and save money.

When customers reduce their energy usage, it reduces the costs to provide energy and the need to build more power plants in the future, which actually lowers bills for everyone.

How do I schedule my pickup?

You can schedule an appliance pickup online or by calling 855-398-6200. Our representatives are available by phone between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays, and between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

Why should I recycle my refrigerator or stand-alone freezer?

Refrigerators and freezers purchased before 1993 can consume two to three times more energy than newer models. Replacing your current unit with an ENERGY STAR® qualified model could save you more than $100 a year on energy costs.

What happens to my old refrigerator?

Everything from insulation, oil, metal, plastic, mercury and more from your old appliance can be reused or disposed of in an environmentally responsible way. This keeps your refrigerator out of landfills – where it could leak hazardous emissions.

How do I find out if my appliance qualifies for the Appliance Recycling program?

Your refrigerator or freezer qualifies if it's between 10 and 30 cubic feet in size. The appliance must also be cleaned out and in working condition.

In addition, you must be a Duke Energy customer, and must provide clear and safe access for the pickup team to remove your appliance. Team members will not risk injury, move your personal effects or modify your home (e.g., remove a door or railings) to remove the appliance.

Do I qualify if I rent my home but own the refrigerator or freezer?

Yes. All Duke Energy Kentucky residential customers who own qualified appliances are eligible to participate.

How do I find the size of my refrigerator?

The size of your refrigerator is often embedded in the model number, which may be printed somewhere on your unit. The model number may look like "TXI21RL." In this case, the fridge is 21 cubic feet.

If you cannot find your model number, you can get a rough estimate by measuring your fridge and multiplying length by its height by its depth (L x H x D).

When will I get my $30?

We'll send you a check for $30 within four to six weeks of the appliance pickup. Or, you can donate the funds directly to the WinterCare assistance program. You'll choose between receiving a check and making a donation when you schedule your appliance pickup.

Am I able to recycle more than one appliance?

Each Duke Energy customer is able to recycle a maximum of two units per year as part of the Appliance Recycling program.

How long will I have to wait on the scheduled pickup day?

When you schedule your pickup, you'll select a day that's convenient for you. We'll then contact you before the scheduled day to set a four-hour pickup window.

Do I need to be at home for the pickup?

You or an authorized adult, 18 years of age or older, must be present to sign the pickup release form.

How do I prepare for the appliance pickup?

On the day of the pickup, you must provide clear and safe access for the pickup team to remove your appliance. Team members will not risk injury, move your personal effects or modify your home (e.g., remove a door or railings) to remove the appliance.

My appliance no longer works. Does it still qualify?

No. Non-working fridges and freezers do not qualify for the Appliance Recycling program. Nonetheless, we encourage you to dispose of the unit in an environmentally responsible manner.

Will other appliances be accepted for the program?

Duke Energy continually evaluates all of its programs to see how they may be improved or expanded. Our Appliance Recycling program is relatively new, so we're still compiling program data and customer feedback. We will continue to evaluate the program to see how we can expand it to include additional appliances.
