  • You'll receive standard A19 LED bulbs. These dimmable 9-watt bulbs are equipped with an omnidirectional 300-degree beam angle that produces even light from the socket base in all directions. The bulb is equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent bulb and has a standard medium base. This allows the bulb to be easily installed into existing table and floor lamps, ceiling fixtures, sconces, pendants and decorative chandeliers.

    • The amount of bulbs you qualify for depends on the number of offers you have previously participated in. Our records track your current past participation. We subtract what you’ve already ordered from the maximum number of bulbs allowed for the program. The difference determines how many Free LED bulbs you can order. Your past participation may include coupons, K12 surveys and other campaigns. If past lighting orders are older than 5 years, you will become eligible for the Free LED offer depending on how many bulbs were a part of each order.

About LEDs

  • It's in everyone's best interest to conserve energy. Energy efficiency programs like the Free LED Program help our customers use less energy. Conserving energy means Duke Energy can meet electricity demand without the expensive rate increases needed to build new power plants. Watch this video to learn more.
  • On average, LEDs last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs and use up to 66 percent less electricity. Each LED will save about $140 in energy costs over the expected lifetime of the bulb.
  • The benefits of LEDs can be maximized by installing these bulbs in high-use areas. This ensures you get the most in energy and cost savings. Each LED has a 22-year lifespan, so you won't have to worry about changing these bulbs anytime soon.
  • Yes. LEDs provided through Duke Energy's Free LED Program do not contain mercury or lead. They are UL-listed and ENERGY STAR® qualified. You can learn more about LEDs here.
  • LEDs contain no harmful substances such as mercury or lead, so there are no extra precautions beyond those you would take with any other electrical device such as making sure the light switch is turned off before installing a new bulb. Although LED bulbs are made with plastic and not glass, it is still recommended to install them by holding the base and not the bulb, to avoid damaging the bulb.
  • LED bulbs do not contain mercury, so there are no special guidelines or procedures required when one breaks. Follow the cleanup procedure that you would use to dispose of a broken incandescent bulb.
  • Virtually all components of an LED bulb can be recycled. Most people are used to throwing traditional incandescent bulbs away in the trash. LEDs can also be disposed in your trash, but recycling is recommended. Many retailers recycle LEDs for free, and some municipalities have special recycling programs for LEDs. Visit to find an LED recycling location near you.
