Duke Energy Community Programs
Duke Energy employees and retirees, together with The Duke Energy Foundation, are committed to making a real difference in the communities we serve. After all, the strength of our business depends on the strength of our local communities.
United Way Campaign
Every year, Duke Energy employees and retirees help provide critical health and human service assistance in our communities through our annual United Way Campaign. During the 2011 campaign, our employees and retirees pledged over $3.16 million to United Way organizations across the country. In addition, the Duke Energy Foundation gave the United Ways $1.4 million in support of our employee annual campaign.
Supporting the Arts
Duke Energy continually supports arts initiatives that support the economic development and cultural diversity of our regions. As part of this commitment, annual employee campaigns and Duke Energy Foundation gifts support Cincinnati’s ArtsWave initiative and Charlotte’s Arts and Science Council – organizations that distribute funds to local arts, science and history programs. In 2011, the employee campaigns and Foundation gifts resulted in nearly $800,000 in donations.
Gift Matching & Volunteering
Employees and retirees are able to maximize their personal contributions to nonprofit organizations through Duke Energy’s Matching Gifts Program.
Thousands of Duke Energy employees and retirees also lend their time and talents each year to a wide variety of volunteer projects in their local communities. Duke Energy’s Volunteers In Action program supports the grassroots volunteer efforts of employees year-round, allowing employees to submit, search and sign up for volunteer opportunities led by fellow employees across our service territories. During 2011, employees and retirees participated in more than 650 volunteer projects.
At the heart of Volunteers In Action is the Global Service Event (GSE). This two-month companywide effort is the signature event of our Volunteers In Action program. GSE celebrates our employees’ and retirees’ volunteer spirit, and supports nonprofit organizations serving our communities. During the 2011 GSE, Duke Energy volunteers worked on 365 projects in 130 communities to help 260 charitable organizations.
