Residential Customer Satisfaction
J.D. Power and Associates
Duke Energy ranked highest in customer satisfaction with residential electric service in the southern United States, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2005 Electric Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction Study. Duke Energy was also the second utility in the nation to receive Call Center Certification from J.D. Power and Associates. This designation recognizes call centers across the U.S. for providing an outstanding customer service experience.

Ethics in Business Award
Society of Financial Service Professionals - Charlotte Chapter
Duke Energy was presented the 2005 Charlotte Ethics in Business Award from the Society of Financial Professionals. The award recognizes businesses that have exemplified and promoted ethical business conduct for the benefit of the workplace, the marketplace, the environment and the community.

Newcomen Society Award
Newcomen Society of the United States
The Newcomen Award was presented to Duke Energy for the company’s business accomplishments, including “outstanding reputation in offering highly competitive electric rates, efficient and reliable operations, value-added products and services, strong sense of stewardship and uncompromising integrity.” The Newcomen Society is an educational foundation created in 1923 to recognize and chronicle outstanding business accomplishments.

Clean Air Excellence Award
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Duke Energy and an array of North Carolina government, business and environmental groups were recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with the 2004 Clean Air Excellence Award, for their collaborative work to create and pass the state’s Clean Smokestacks Act. The act is considered a nationwide model for controlling multiple air pollutants from coal-fired power plants. Duke Energy’s investment of approximately $1.5 billion to comply with the legislation is expected to be the largest series of construction projects in North Carolina over the next decade.

Most Efficient Coal Generator
Electric Light & Power magazine
Marshall Steam Station in Catawba County was recognized as the country’s most efficient coal-fired generator in the United States in 2003, according to the most recent rankings in Electric Light & Power (EL&P) magazine, a utility industry publication. Belews Creek Steam Station in Stokes County was ranked fifth, and Allen Steam Station in Gaston County was ranked 13th in efficiency.

Customer Service Project of the Year
Electric Light & Power magazine and Chartwell, Inc.
Duke Energy was awarded the Customer Service Project of the Year by Electric Light & Power magazine (EL&P) and Chartwell, Inc. for enhancements the company made to its automated phone answering system. The award recognizes energy companies for excellence in customer service and marketing. Duke Energy also added a new automated outage reporting system for Spanish-speaking customers to report outages 24-hours a day.

ServiceOne Award
PA Benchmarking
PA Benchmarking recognized Duke Energy for providing exceptional service to customers using measures of excellence in customer care. An advisory group of industry experts selected the measures considered, which included meter reading, billing, call center, field service, credit and collections and theft protection.

Utility ACE Award
The Energy Planning Network
The Energy Planning Network recognized Duke Energy in the area of residential customer care for enhancements the company made to its automated phone system. The Utility ACE Program received entries from utilities based in Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe, the United States, South America and Canada. Winners for each category were determined by a panel of judges who scored entries on project innovation, project benefits, project management and application quality.

Center of Excellence
Benchmark Portal
The Center of Excellence, awarded by Benchmark Portal through the Purdue University Center for Customer-Driven Quality, certifies that Duke Energy’s customer contact center ranks in the top 10 percent of the 20,000 call centers studied for efficiency and effectiveness.

2003 Emergency Response Award
Edison Electric Institute (EEI)
EEI recognized Duke Energy for its outstanding response to a massive ice storm that affected virtually the entire Duke Power service area in December 2002—the worst storm in the company’s 100 year history.

2002 Safety Performance Award
Southeastern Electric Exchange (SEE)
Duke Energy received the 2002 Safety Performance Award from the Southeastern Electric Exchange (SEE) a nonprofit association of 30 electric and energy companies in the Southeast U.S. The award is based on a “recordable case rate” for injury and illness performance. Duke Energy was one of only three companies to receive the award.

American Customer Satisfaction Index
Duke Energy’s customer service ranked second among electric utilities on the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

Outstanding Stewardship of America’s Rivers
National Hydropower Association
Recognized as an exceptional river steward for our work along the Jocassee Gorges area in North Carolina and South Carolina. We worked to protect more than 45 miles of fish trout streams and numerous smaller tributaries, all of which are open to the public.

2002 Industry Excellence Award
Southeastern Electric Exchange SEE
Duke Energy received first place honors in Southeastern Electric Exchange’s 2002 Industry Excellence Awards for the company developing, building and implementing a new customer billing and information system and for the development and use of reel-less cable packaging.

2002 Corporate Leadership Award for Diversity
Business Women’s Network and Diversity Best Practices
Awarded the 2002 Corporate Leadership Award for Diversity by Business Women’s Network and Diversity Best Practices for exemplary commitment to women and minorities.

Coal Generator Efficiency in 2002
Electric Light and Power magazine
Marshall Steam Station in Terrell and Belews Creek Steam Station in Belews Creek were recognized as the country’s second and third most energy efficient coal-fired generators in the most recent Electric Light and Power magazine rankings.

TQS Research
Duke Energy ranked No. 1 in overall customer satisfaction in electric service to large commercial and industrial customers according to the TQS Research survey of companies served by the nation’s 60 largest utilities. The annual Key Accounts National Benchmark survey measures customer satisfaction levels in the areas of energy efficiency, reliability, power quality, price and account representative performance.

Recognition for Duke’s long-term preservation of tens of thousands of wilderness acres surrounding the Savannah River headwaters while continuing to meet the region’s electrical needs with clean, renewable and reliable hydroelectricity.

Edison Electric Institute Safety Ranking
Edison Electric Institute
Duke Energy’s electric distribution and transmission operations placed first in the EEI 2000 annual safety survey of like-sized utilities with the best Occupational Safety Health Administration record for the year. Duke ranked in the top decile in health and safety, improving on its top-quartile performance of 1999. Duke also ranked best-of-industry with fewest workplace injuries.

Received the Blue Diamond Award from the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce in 2000 for the best use of technology for creating a system to automate data gathering and communication about electric usage costs and availability.
