Transmission Investments
Reliability is a responsibility that Duke Energy Ohio, Inc. (Duke Energy Ohio) takes very seriously. As part of our dedication to build a smarter energy grid, Duke Energy Ohio will be rebuilding 2.75 miles of double-circuit 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines in Butler County from our Mulhauser Substation, located at 7250 Dixie Highway in Fairfield, to the Port Union Substation at 5226 Rialto Road in West Chester Township.
Project Need
The Duke Energy Ohio transmission project will increase capacity to support the reliability of the electric transmission system.
Project Description
Two transmission lines are presently supported by 15 steel lattice towers and one wood pole. The existing structures will be replaced by steel poles with concrete foundations. The steel poles will range in height from 110 to 160 feet tall. The existing structures range in height from 100 to 140 feet tall. The new structures will be installed in pieces.
One of the transmission lines will be rebuilt to add capacity and support the reliability of the electric transmission system. The second 138-kV transmission line will be transferred to the new structures. Three segments of this second 138-kV transmission line will be replaced with new line; these new segments will support the reliability of the electric transmission system and will not add capacity.
Vegetation clearing for this project is scheduled to begin in May 2020. Foundations for the new structures will be installed July through September 2020.
Duke Energy Ohio is proposing the construction of the project to begin October 2020 and to be completed by June 2021.
A letter of notification to construct, operate and maintain this electric transmission line project is now pending before the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) in Columbus, Ohio.
