Village of Evendale Pole Replacements

Transmission Investments

Reliability is a responsibility that Duke Energy takes very seriously. As part of our dedication to build a smarter energy system, Duke Energy is replacing utility poles on a 1,600-foot portion (one-third of a mile) section of existing 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission line in the Village of Evendale in Hamilton County, Ohio.

Project Need

Recent inspections reveal that we need to replace approximately eight wooden poles near Sherbrooke Drive. The Village of Evendale, in collaboration with Duke Energy, will proceed on the restoration portion of the project as part of the village's planning to improve its existing drainage systems in this area.

Project Description

The affected wood structures will be replaced with steel poles to improve reliability. The new replacements will be between 10 to 30 feet taller than the present construction – most about 25 feet taller – to address modern reliability standards. The steel poles last longer than the wood poles and require less maintenance and inspections (therefore less disturbance to neighborhoods). The poles have an improved design for lightning protection, plus they can withstand higher wind speeds than the traditional wood poles. Both attributes benefit the energy grid during inclement weather.

To ensure reliable energy, trees that are close to power lines must be trimmed or removed so that they don't disrupt electric service to homes, businesses, schools and hospitals. Preconstruction activities such as vegetation clearing for the project will get underway in October 2021. We will be working closely with property owners affected by vegetation removal and also will provide guidance on plantings that can successfully coexist with the electric system.

Construction is scheduled to begin in late October 2021 through the end of the year. Additional construction will involve transferring the distribution lines – the wires that carry energy into homes, schools and businesses – to the new steel poles. We expect all Duke Energy construction to be completed by spring 2022, which will allow the Village of Evendale to move forward on its planning to address its drainage systems.

Benefits to the Community

  • Improves electrical system reliability
  • Maintains a robust system for supplying and delivering energy, which is integral to ensuring the continued economic growth and prosperity of the community
  • Improves power quality and reliability

Engagement

Community engagement allows us to receive input and to share information about this project.

Property owners first received notification about this project in a letter sent in February 2021.

An additional letter summarizing the project schedule was sent in July 2021.
