Carolinas Power Delivery

More than 2 million customers in the Carolinas depend on Duke Energy for reliable and economically priced electricity. This essential task is accomplished through a well-designed generation and power delivery system.

Our system is made up of a diverse mix of generation assets located throughout our Carolinas service area. Our generating stations connect to a strong, well-maintained delivery system, which carries electricity to our customers: more than 13,000 miles of transmission lines and approximately 94,000 miles of distribution lines.

System Monitoring

Careful monitoring and control of the system by experienced, highly trained operators, provide a solid platform for operations within the Carolinas. Duke Energy’s system also has a number of redundant protective devices designed to protect against a system-wide blackout. Duke Energy is a member of the Southeastern Electric Reliability Council (SERC), one of the regional councils within the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC). These councils work together to ensure that the bulk electric system in North America is reliable, adequate and secure.

Maintenance and Upgrades

Typically, Duke Energy invests roughly $90 to $130 million annually in transmission operation, maintenance and upgrades in the Carolinas. Our system is planned and operated to ensure reliability consistent with industry best practices and customer needs. We have several transmission line and substation projects underway to ensure we continue to meet the growing needs of our region.

Vegetation Management - tree trimming

Duke Energy’s routine maintenance program for trees and brush growth around power lines helps ensure we can provide safe and reliable power to our customers. Our practices and techniques are approved by nationally recognized arborists. By removing potentially dangerous fire and electrical shock hazards, we are helping to protect power lines, prevent power outages and keep you safe.
