Duke Energy and Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs)

Duke Energy is committed to finding new ways to improve energy efficiency and to slow, stop and eventually reverse growth in greenhouse gas emissions. We already have five plug-in cars and we have made a commitment that by 2020 all new vehicle purchases will be plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). We believe plug-in electric vehicles will save our customers money on transportation costs, reduce our national dependence on imported oil and reduce emissions.
Our support for PEVs is primarily focused in two areas.
First, we are seeking to raise public awareness of the benefits of PEVs. If plug-in technology becomes widely accepted by the driving public, America could become less dependent on foreign oil, and the environment would benefit from reduced emissions – leading to a future of lower carbon and cleaner air.
Second, we are helping to shape how electric vehicles will interface with the nation’s power grid. We’re working with industry organizations, major automotive manufacturers and start-up companies to ensure that the electric grid remains safe and reliable, as plug-in vehicles become commercially available and electricity begins to be used as a transportation fuel. Our goal is to ensure our customers have the option to participate and that the experience is convenient and cost effective.
In PEVs, we see a prime opportunity for the two largest contributors to greenhouse gases, the electric power and transportation industries, to work together to reduce emissions.
