Mercantile Self Direct Rebates
Duke Energy Ohio now offers a rebate program for past energy efficiency initiatives that have not received Smart $aver incentives.
About the Mercantile Self Direct program
The Mercantile Self Direct rebate program is for qualified, nonresidential customers who installed eligible equipment – or implemented certain energy efficiency measures – on or after Jan. 1, 2010.
Rebates are available for projects that would usually fall under Duke Energy’s Smart $aver prescriptive and custom programs. Mercantile Self Direct rebates are also offered for no-cost and low-cost measures, such as behavioral initiatives that improved energy efficiency.**
Program eligibility
Self Direct rebates are available for past projects and initiatives that have not previously received a Duke Energy incentive, and were completed on or after Jan. 1, 2010. Customers must also use more than 700,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year – or be part of an account with multiple locations.
Application Process
Applications for Mercantile Self Direct rebates are subject to review and approval by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).
- Submit completed Mercantile Self Direct application documents and supporting information (including the cover sheet) to Duke Energy. You can find the applications on the right side of this page.
- Duke Energy will review your submission, validate the rebate offer and issue you signatory documents required by PUCO.
- Review the terms and conditions, and complete and return the PUCO signatory documents to Duke Energy.
- Duke Energy will submit the documents to PUCO for review and approval.***
- Duke Energy will issue your rebate approximately ten days after PUCO approval.
**No cost, low cost and other similarly rebated measures are only eligible for rebate until Duke Energy reaches its annual energy efficiency achievement mandate for the year.
***PUCO review and approval typically does not exceed 60 days.
Steps for Submitting the Proper Rebate Application
Use the table below as a guide to determine which Mercantile Self Direct (MSD) application form fits your project(s).
- Locate the equipment type in the first column.
- Click on the hyperlink. If the equipment you installed is not listed, you will need to submit your rebate request using the MSD Custom application process. Please note that approval of any custom project is subject to overall program requirements.
- If the equipment you installed is listed, then scroll right to the appropriate installation purpose (e.g., failed equipment, replaced for improved efficiency, new construction). The corresponding cell will tell you which form(s) you need to complete and submit to Duke Energy.

All Behavioral Modifications (with or without cost) should be submitted using the Custom Application & General Worksheet. Expected incentives associated with these measures depend on the type. No-cost programs receive $0.005/kWh,$0.005/kW.** Programs with associated cost may receive up to 50 percent of standard incentive.
Certain projects with paybacks of less than one year that do not qualify under our Smart $aver Custom Incentive program, may be eligible under Self Direct at $0.005 ˘/kWh and $0.005/kW.** Please use the MSD Custom application along with the General worksheet when submitting a project that meets this criterion.
