What is Green Power?
Green power is electricity produced from resources – like the sun, wind, water and more – that do not pollute our environment. This type of energy is harnessed all over the world and is key to our country’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. But green power projects are more expensive than standard power generation, so we’re helping the development by asking our communities for support.
Help develop more green power sources
NC GreenPower gives you the ability to support the development of green power sources throughout the state. Here’s how it works:
- Sign up for NC GreenPower either online or by calling 800-943-7585.
- Purchase a 100-kilowatt-hour (kWh) block of green power for just $4 a month. Your 100-kWh commitment equates to about 10 percent of an average residential customer’s electricity use and helps to avoid 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
- Once you sign up, the equivalent amount of certified, green power is delivered to North Carolina’s electric grid. These new renewable projects would not have happened without the support of your contributions. Your monthly commitment also supports renewable energy education in our state.

Duke Energy does not profit from NC GreenPower. One-hundred percent of the funds collected are transferred to NC GreenPower, which supports local renewable projects in North Carolina.
Large-Volume Customers Choose NC Renewable Energy
Customers who purchase at least 100 blocks (10,000 kWh) each month can choose the NC Renewable Energy program. The program gives large-volume customers the ability to purchase green power at $2.50 per 100-kWh-block, and the amount is added to the monthly electric bill. This product features energy produced from a wider range of sources.
