Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky Finish Restoration Ahead of Schedule January 31, 2009
Duke Energy line crews worked into the night to restore power to all Ohio and Kentucky customers. Duke finished ahead of our estimated time of restoration and has now returned to normal operations.
Approximately 50,000 customers were without power at the peak of this week’s ice storm that pounded Clermont, Brown and Hamilton counties in Ohio and Kenton, Campbell and Boone counties in Kentucky.
Throughout the week, more than 1,300 crew members from Duke Energy and supporting utilities worked in Ohio and Kentucky to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. While, hundreds more worked behind the scenes in the customer service and logistics departments. More than 120,000 calls were received by customer service representatives throughout the storm.
"We are extremely pleased with the storm restoration efforts of our entire Duke team over the past four days. We are grateful for the internal and external crews that traveled far to assist. The dedication displayed by the crew members goes beyond words," said Julie Janson, president of Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky.
Although Duke line crews from Ohio and Kentucky finished their efforts early, no one gets to rest yet. Over 400 crew members from Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky have been sent to assist Duke Energy Indiana crews in finishing restoration efforts. After restoring all Duke customers, we will then assist neighboring utility companies in communities that were hardest hit. Duke Energy Indiana still has 4,000 customers without power today with over 80,000 outages at the peak of the storm. Duke Energy Indiana officials estimate that all customers will be restored by Saturday evening with just a few scattered outages remaining on Sunday.
"The Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky team will not rest until all customers have power. It’s now time to help our neighbors in Indiana," Janson added.
Duke Energy’s Ohio operations deliver electricity to approximately 690,000 electric customers and natural gas service to approximately 425,000 customers. Duke Energy’s Kentucky operations provide approximately 1,100 net megawatts of electricity to approximately 135,000 electric customers. The company also provides natural gas service to approximately 95,000 customers in Northern Kentucky.
