Duke Energy Indiana Continues Efforts to Restore Electric Service Jan. 29, 2009

Steady progress continues to be made in restoring power to Indiana customers following significant icing of power lines, trees and highways from a winter storm that struck the Midwest late Tuesday.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, Duke Energy had resolved approximately 61,000 of the approximately 95,000 power outages in its Indiana service area. About 34,000 customers remain out of service. The hardest work is still ahead, however, as the company begins to tackle time-intensive repairs affecting smaller groups of customers. Restoration work is expected to continue into the weekend. Estimated restoration times (pdf, 1.62 MB) for the hardest hit areas include:

  • Clarksville, Jeffersonville, New Albany—By 11 p.m. Saturday, with some isolated outages into Sunday
  • Corydon/Salem—By 6 p.m. Saturday
  • Madison—By 6 p.m. Friday

(Restoration times are estimates for when Duke Energy expects to have storm-related outages restored. There may still be some isolated outages remaining after these times.)

“We have brought in a second wave of additional crews from the region and our companies in the Carolinas to help speed power restoration,” said Duke Energy Indiana President Jim Stanley. “We’ll have about 1,370 line workers, damage assessors and tree clearing personnel working in southern Indiana today. We appreciate our customer’s patience during this significant outage.

“The safety of the public as well as our employees working in extreme conditions is our top concern. We urge customers with medical conditions or other special needs to make appropriate arrangements for their own comfort and safety. Please consider checking on friends, neighbors and others who may need help during these challenging conditions,” Stanley said.

Safety remains critically important during restoration efforts. Customers are encouraged to follow these guidelines:

  • Take care when moving fallen trees and debris and avoid down power lines.
  • Home meter boxes and weather heads, the point where the service line is attached to the house, should be checked for damage. If the meter box is damaged or the weather head has pulled away from the structure, a licensed electrician should be called to make repairs so that Duke Energy crews can provide service.   • Portable electric generators should be used with caution and ventilated appropriately. Duke Energy recommends that appliances be plugged directly into the generator. A licensed electrician should be used if the customer is considering wiring the generator to their house.
  • Customers using generators are asked to watch for crews working in their neighborhood and to shut down their generators to prevent the backflow of electricity to power lines, which could seriously injure Duke Energy workers.

Customers can assist in restoration operations by:

  • Turning off lights and as many appliances and electronics as possible including heating systems. This will reduce the potential for circuit overloads when power is restored
