Duke Energy Ohio Battles Ice Damage to Restore Electric Service Jan. 28, 2009

Ice damage from this week’s winter storm has caused power outages for thousands of Duke Energy customers in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

As of 10 a.m., approximately 25,000 customers were out of service. This number continues to fluctuate given the weather event is still in progress.

The most severe weather hit Hamilton County and Clermont County, Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

“Ice can be a utility’s worst enemy,” said Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky President Julie Janson. “It clings to tree limbs, causing them to lean or fall on power lines. This can cause extensive damage to power lines in certain areas. Based on the weather forecast, we mobilized early Tuesday and brought in 450 additional line workers from Ohio and North and South Carolina to supplement our local crews.”

Duke Energy cautions people to stay away from downed power lines and anything touching those lines.

“Downed power lines can be extremely dangerous,” Janson said. “Customer and worker safety is our first priority. Anyone who sees a downed line should assume it’s energized, avoid it and report it by calling us at 1-800-543-5599.”

“While the level of icing is not as heavy as originally forecasted, the weather still caused a significant outage event,” said Janson. “Crews are in the process of restoring power. However, given the extent of the outages and treacherous conditions, we will continue to assess the total damage over the next 24 hours. We anticipate it will take multiple days for full restoration.”

Customers are encouraged to report power outages by calling 800-543-5599. Additional storm tips and outage information can be found on the Duke Energy web at Customers can also get storm news updates on Twitter at
