CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

A total of 518 Duke Energy employees and local community volunteers collected more than 90,000 pounds of trash during Big Sweep in North Carolina and South Carolina. This is approximately the weight of 14 large sport utility vehicles.

“Participation in Big Sweep is a wonderful way for individuals or organizations such as civic, scouts, and church groups, to help improve the quality of our lakes and shorelines simply by removing trash,” said Ken Manuel, a Duke Energy senior scientist, and leader of the companywide effort. “Be involved with an organization or go on your own with your family or a friend any time of the year and make a difference in helping keep our environment clean.”

The amount of trash collected in the rivers and waterways this year was slightly less than in recent years, Manuel said. Last year, about 92,000 pounds of litter was collected. Some of the most common items found included car tires, waterlogged styrofoam floats, plastic containers, bottles, drink cans and toys. One team was able to save several catfish hung on a fishing line that apparently had not been checked for a while.

The purpose of Big Sweep is to rid the states’ lakes, streams, waterways and shorelines of litter. While most scheduled cleanups occur in September and October, local events are held throughout the year. Duke Energy’s effort is part of a larger statewide Big Sweep program, with the official Big Sweep day being Oct. 4.
