Duke Energy began commercial operation at its 59-megawatt Ocotillo Wind Farm, located in Howard County, Texas on Nov. 1.

Construction of the 28-turbine site began in February 2008. The clean, renewable electricity produced from the wind farm will be delivered into the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) transmission system and will be sold to Barclays Bank PLC.

Earlier this summer, Duke Energy began operating a 30-megawatt wind farm near Cheyenne, Wyo., and will bring additional wind turbines into commercial operation later this year at the Notrees site located in Ector and Winkler Counties, Texas. Duke Energy is also a 50 percent owner of the Sweetwater Project in Nolan County, Texas – one of the largest wind projects in operation in the world.

“We set a goal of having approximately 500 megawatts of wind energy in service by the end of 2008,” said Wouter van Kempen, president of Duke Energy Generation Services. “We’re on schedule to meet that target, as well as our goal of having 5,000 megawatts in our development pipeline by year end.”

Duke Energy Generation Services (DEGS) develops, owns and operates electric generation for large energy consumers, municipalities, utilities and industrial facilities. DEGS specializes in developing innovative and environmentally sound generation solutions using a variety of fuels, including wind and other renewable energy sources.

Duke Energy, one of the largest electric power companies in the United States, supplies and delivers electricity to approximately 4 million U.S. customers and natural gas service to approximately 520,000 customers in its regulated jurisdictions.
