CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

Duke Energy Carolinas has distributed $11 million to more than 50 assistance agencies across its North Carolina service territory.

The funds, from shareholders, are designed to assist low-income residents in North Carolina with energy-related costs.

"We recognize we're in challenging economic times. These contributions will provide a safety net for people who may be struggling to pay their electric bills," said Brett Carter, Duke Energy state president - North Carolina. "From assistance with bill payments and deposits to basic home weatherization projects, these funds will make a significant impact in helping manage energy costs."

As part of the settlement agreement in the company's request to increase rates in North Carolina, Duke Energy agreed to provide the shareholder contribution to help offset the impact for some of its most vulnerable customers.

The funds were distributed by the Foundation for the Carolinas to a wide range of social service agencies, crisis centers and other support organizations that provide help paying power bills.
