PLAINFIELD, IND. -

Duke Energy Indiana has issued a “Request for Proposals” to purchase power or generation assets to meet growing energy demands.

The company is seeking up to 800 megawatts of peaking and/or intermediate generation starting in 2008 or 2009.

“This is just one of our many strategies to ensure we meet customer demand,” said Jim Stanley, president, Duke Energy Indiana. “We’re also looking at building a state-of-the-art coal gasification plant in Edwardsport, Ind. In addition, we have contracted for significant amounts of wind power. Soon, we’ll also file plans to step-up our energy efficiency programs to reduce power demand.”

Duke Energy routinely surveys the competitive wholesale power market. The company is assessing how much peaking and intermediate generation is available and at what cost. Peaking power is typically needed when energy demand is greatest, often on hot summer days or cold winter mornings. Intermediate generation supplies power to customers on a more routine basis.

A full copy of the “Request for Proposal for Peaking/Intermediate Power Supply,” can be found at http://www.dukeenergyindianarfp.com. Proposals are due by November 16, 2007, and will be evaluated and negotiated over several months.

Duke Energy’s Indiana operations provide approximately 7,300 megawatts of safe, reliable and competitively priced electricity to more than 770,000 electric customers, making it the state’s largest electric supplier.

Duke Energy, one of the largest electric power companies in the United States, supplies and delivers energy to approximately 4 million U.S. customers. The company has nearly 37,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity in the Midwest and the Carolinas, and natural gas distribution services in Ohio and Kentucky. In addition, Duke Energy has more than 4,000 megawatts of electric generation in Latin America, and is a joint-venture partner in a U.S. real estate company.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Duke Energy is a Fortune 500 company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DUK. More information about the company is available on the Internet at: www.duke-energy.com.
