PUCO Approves Duke Energy Ohio Energy Efficiency Programs July 11, 2007

Customers of Duke Energy Ohio will soon have a variety of new resources available to them to help improve energy efficiency in their homes and businesses, after approval today of a portfolio of programs by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.

“We look at energy efficiency as the ‘fifth fuel’ joining coal, natural gas, nuclear and renewables in meeting the future demand for energy,” said Sandra Meyer, president of Duke Energy Ohio. “By providing additional incentives and resources, we hope to help customers manage their energy costs wisely.”

Residential programs approved are:

  • Power Manager – bill credits for residential air conditioning cycling during peak demand periods in the summer months.
  • Smart $aver® – incentives and support to customers, heating and air conditioning contractors, and new home builders for the use of high-efficiency heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Home Energy House Call – an in-home energy analysis that helps customers determine the most cost-effective steps they can take in their home to save energy.
  • Energy Star Products – incentives to customers and support through retailers to encourage the use of ENERGY STAR® products, such as compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
  • Energy Efficiency Web site – advanced programs, tools and measures available for customers to manage their energy usage.
  • Ohio Energy Project – renewed support of a school-based energy education program.

Residential programs approved for research purposes are:

  • Personalized Energy Report – customized energy report aimed at helping customers better manage their energy costs.
  • AC Check Pilot – a central air conditioning tune up and recharge program to increase efficiency of units.
  • Appliance Turn-In – incentives to customers to dispose of their old room air conditioners and purchase efficient Energy Star models.
  • Pre-Paid Billing Services – the option of paying for electrical use prior to consumption allowing customers to control their bills and energy use. 

Programs approved for business customers are:

  • C&I Prescriptive Incentive Program – incentives to commercial and industrial customers to install high-efficiency equipment in applications involving new construction, retrofit and replacement of failed equipment.
  • School Incentive Program – incentives to schools to install high efficiency equipment in applications involving new construction, retrofit and replacement of failed equipment.
  • Photovoltaic Schools Demonstration/Education Program –  installation and use of three photovoltaic demonstration units to create awareness of the technical achievements, environmental considerations and public policy issues that have matured to make photovoltaics an option for meeting today’s energy needs.

Implementation of the programs will begin over the next several months.  Duke Energy Ohio will communicate with customers through a variety of means to increase awareness of the energy efficiency offerings and encourage their use.

The programs were first proposed in early 2006 and were endorsed by the Duke Energy Community Partnership, which is a collaborative group made up of representatives of organizations interested in energy conservation, efficiency and assistance to low-income customers. The programs will be paid through a cost recovery mechanism that will be adjusted annually to reflect the previous year’s activity.
