DUKE ENERGY BOARD NAMES KEITH TRENT GROUP VICE PRESIDENT, GENERAL COUNSEL AND SECRETARY IN ACTING CAPACITY
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Duke Energy’s board of directors today elected Keith Trent group vice president, general counsel and secretary in an acting capacity, effective March 1, 2005.
Trent is currently general counsel, litigation, for the company. He succeeds Martha Wyrsch, who was named president and chief executive officer of Duke Energy Gas Transmission, also effective March 1.
“Keith has done an excellent job resolving many of the regulatory and litigation issues that Duke Energy has faced. He has successfully negotiated settlements that were in the best interests of our company, our customers and our investors and has helped rebuild positive relationships with regulatory and enforcement agencies,” said Paul M. Anderson, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Duke Energy. Trent will report to Anderson and serve on the company’s Executive Committee. Anderson noted that appointing an acting leader to this key position is the same approach he used in filling the chief financial officer position last year.
Trent joined Duke Energy in May 2002 with responsibility for managing all the company’s major litigation and government investigations. He also has had accountability for the legal teams that address the company’s environment, health and safety issues as well as labor and employment matters.
Trent received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, with honors, from Southern Methodist University, and earned a juris doctor degree, with high honors from the University of Texas College of Law.
Before joining Duke Energy, he was a partner for more than 10 years in the Dallas-based law firm of Snell, Brannian & Trent. Prior to that, he was an attorney at Jackson Walker in Dallas. He began his career as a reservoir/production engineer with Arco Oil & Gas in Houston in January 1982.
He is licensed to practice law by the Supreme Court of Texas, as well as numerous federal district courts, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U. S. Supreme Court. Trent is a member of the Texas State Bar, American Bar Association and Houston Bar Association. He is a member of the Charlotte Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.
Trent was born in North Little Rock, Ark., and currently resides in Charlotte. He and his wife, Lucy, have two sons.
