MARITIMES & NORTHEAST PIPELINE ANNOUNCES OPEN SEASON FOR NEW NATURAL GAS TRANSPORTATION CAPACITY

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA AND WALTHAM, MASS. – Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline (Maritimes) announced today an open season for new natural gas transportation capacity that will expand its 850-mile (1365-kilometre) pipeline system.

During the Feb. 15 to March 31 open season, shippers in Canada and the United States may submit nominations to acquire firm transportation services from Maritimes. This open season is in response to interest shown by liquefied natural gas (LNG) suppliers and proponents of projects that could connect to Maritimes.

“Expanding the Maritimes pipeline system will allow us to deliver new supplies of natural gas to markets in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, where demand continues to grow,” said Phil Knoll, group vice president of Duke Energy Gas Transmission, managing partner of Maritimes. “Our challenge is to meet that demand by developing the infrastructure needed to bring new energy sources and greater energy security to the region. Maritimes’ assets are ideally suited to help meet this challenge.”

The open season provides an opportunity for both suppliers and consumers of natural gas to confirm their interest in transporting new volumes of natural gas that may become available through LNG projects proposed for Atlantic Canada.  Maritimes is able to accommodate new volumes through additional compression and pipeline looping.

“We can economically and efficiently increase our system’s capacity and lower the rates for our shippers,” said Doug Bloom, president of Maritimes. “Atlantic Canada and New England would greatly benefit from an LNG terminal development as an additional source of natural gas supply, which will be helpful in securing the region’s future energy needs.”
