CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The fourth serious storm this winter has left more than half of Duke Power’s Triad/Triangle-area customers were without electricity. System-wide storm-related power outages for Duke Power customers peaked at 350,000.

“This storm has caused major damage in a very concentrated area and we have continued to see outages occur this morning,” said E.O. Ferrell, Duke Power’s senior vice president of electric distribution.  “The majority of these outages occurred in the Triad/Triangle area of North Carolina, which received more than one-half of an inch of ice from this storm.”

Burlington and Reidsville have also been hard hit by the storm, with 57 percent and 82 percent power outages currently reported, respectively.

“We have complemented our 2,200 Duke Power line and tree personnel with an additional 1,000 line personnel from other utilities,” Ferrell continued.  “We are continuing to work around the clock to bring our customers back to service.”

Due to the extent of damage caused by this natural disaster, our restoration efforts will continue throughout Monday in some cases.  We encourage affected customers to consider alternate arrangements based on this restoration estimate.

Customers without power are encouraged to check the meter box and the service line connecting to the meter attached to their home to see if either is damaged.  If so, Duke Power recommends that customers turn off their main breaker until that damage is repaired. If the meter box is damaged or pulled away from the building, customers need to contact a licensed electrician for repairs and their local county inspection office for an inspection.   

All downed power lines and any object touching a line should be regarded as potentially energized and dangerous. Outages should be reported immediately by calling 1-800-POWERON (1-800-769-3766). Spanish speaking customers may call 1/800-943-6914 to report an outage.

Duke Power focuses on restoration efforts in the following sequence, many of which occur simultaneously. This sequence enables power restoration to public health and safety facilities and to the greatest number of locations in the shortest length of time:

• Public safety related situations (such as de-energizing live lines);
• Emergency service facilities (hospitals, law enforcement, fire departments);
• Critical infrastructure (water and sewer facilities);
• Distribution feeders and subfeeders, the “backbone” of the power delivery system;
• Distribution tap lines, which connect the backbone to individual locations (neighborhood lines); and
• Distribution transformers and individual service lines.

Tormenta de hielo deja sin suministro eléctrico a más de la mitad
de los clientes de Duke Power en el área de Triad/Triangle

CHARLOTTE, Carolina del Norte, 28 de febrero /PRNewswire-FirstCall/-- La cuarta tormenta de importancia de este invierno ha dejado sin electricidad a más de la mitad de los clientes de Duke Power en el área de Triad/Triangle. El número total de cortes del suministro que han afectado a clientes de Duke Power en todo el sistema ha llegado a un máximo de 350,000.

Si la caja de registro está dañada o arrancada del edificio, los clientes tienen que contactar con un electricista con licencia para que realice las reparaciones y con la correspondiente oficina de inspección del condado para que realicen una inspección.
