DUKE POWER REPORTS LIMITED IMPACT FROM WINTER STORM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Duke Power personnel continue to restore outages as they occur from icy conditions due to a winter storm affecting the company’s service territory.  Currently, 2,600 customers are without service.

“We prepared for the worst and have been very fortunate with the limited amount of damage received to this point,” said E.O. Ferrell, Duke Power’s senior vice president of electric distribution.  “Our 2,200 line and tree personnel remain on full storm alert, augmented by 900 off-system personnel from the Carolinas, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana.  In addition, more than 550 customer service representatives are standing by to respond to customers’ calls.”

“Weather conditions changed slightly, creating more of a sleet event for us,” continued Ferrell.  “While sleet creates hazardous driving conditions, it does not accumulate on power lines.”

Should winter weather affect your area, all downed power lines and any object touching a line should be regarded as potentially energized and dangerous.  Outages should be reported immediately by calling 1-800-POWERON (1-800-769-3766).  Spanish speaking customers can call 1-800-943-6914 to report an outage.

Duke Power focuses on restoration efforts in the following sequence, many of which occur simultaneously. This sequence enables power restoration to public health and safety facilities and to the greatest number of locations in the shortest length of time.

THE NEXT UPDATE WILL BE PROVIDED AT 5:30 A.M.
