DUKE POWER RESPONDING TO WINTER STORM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Duke Power personnel are responding to the winter ice storm that has interrupted service to approximately 7,500 customers out of our customer base of 2.2 million.  Complete restoration may take several days if the winter storm and icing continues as predicted.

“This storm has the potential to create a significant number of customer outages,” said E.O. Ferrell, Duke Power’s senior vice president of electric distribution.  “Our 2,200 line and tree personnel are on full storm alert and are augmented by approximately 900 off-system personnel from the Carolinas, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana who began arriving yesterday.  We also have more than 550 customer service representatives standing by to respond to customers’ telephone calls.”

All downed power lines and any object touching a line should be regarded as potentially energized and dangerous.  Outages should be reported immediately by calling 1-800-POWERON (1/800-769-3766).  Spanish speaking customers can call 1-800-943-6914 to report an outage.

Duke Power focuses on restoration efforts in the following sequence, many of which occur simultaneously. This sequence enables power restoration to public health and safety facilities and to the greatest number of locations in the shortest length of time:
