DUKE ENERGY: A LEADING COMPANY IN CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second straight year, Duke Energy has been named one of the world’s leading companies in a measurement of financial, environmental and social performance.

The company will be included in 2003 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), a global index of the world’s most sustainable firms. Launched in 1999, the DJSI World is the world’s first global index tracking the performance of leading sustainable corporations worldwide.

The index will be comprised of more than 300 companies from 23 countries – roughly the top 10 percent of the world’s largest companies. The index is reviewed annually by Dow Jones and the Zurich-based Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) Group. The index is used by more than 40 asset managers around the world as an objective benchmark for sustainability portfolios.

“Around the globe, Duke Energy employees have worked hard to make us a leading company,” said Richard B. Priory, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Duke Energy. “Duke Energy has a rich history of balancing business needs with environmental, community and stakeholder interests, and we continue to believe this approach delivers superior value to our shareholders.”

Corporate sustainability, as defined by the DJSI World, is a business approach that seeks to create long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks derived from economic, environmental and social developments. Full details of the design philosophy, review methodology and index composition are available on the Internet at www.sustainability-indexes.com.

“People realize that sustainability trends have an important impact on the companies they invest in,” said John Prestbo, editor, Dow Jones Indexes. “Moreover, recent corporate scandals have emphasized the need for greater transparency and accountability. As a result, an increasing number of investors are turning to the concept of sustainability to identify well-managed and future-oriented companies.”
