CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three Duke Energy employees were honored today with the company’s Robinson Citizenship Award – representing extraordinary efforts to help humanity or save a life.

Honored were:

·         Garwood Duncan, maintenance, quality-control, civil inspector, Duke Power’s Oconee Nuclear Station, Seneca, S.C.

·         Joann Hager, senior information management analyst, Duke Energy, Charlotte

·         Rick Neyrey, director of venture management, Duke Energy Services, Houston, Texas

Established in 1961, the Robinson Citizenship Award has annually recognized Duke Energy employees for outstanding efforts to the company and the community. The award is named for William Smith O’Brien Robinson Jr., who served as Duke Energy chairman from 1957 to 1959, and worked for the company for 53 years. Robinson died in 1967.

Garwood Duncan’s quick efforts helped save the life of an elderly man, who was involved in a single-vehicle crash. The man crashed into a swing gate pipe near a local humane society shelter, and was trapped in his car by the wreck. Duncan called 911 and applied first aid to the man until medics could arrive. Duncan’s actions were credited with saving the man’s life.

Joann Hager is the founder and owner of Tri-County Animal Rescue, a Charlotte-area, animal, non-profit shelter that has helped spay or neuter more than 2,000 pets and place these animals in loving homes. Tri-County Animal Rescue has also provided free or reduced-rate veterinary care for pets of the elderly or those who cannot afford it.

For the past four years, Rick Neyrey has been a volunteer with Child Advocates in Houston – a local chapter of Court Appointed Special Advocates, a private, national, non-profit organization of volunteers, who represent in court the best interests of abused and neglected children. Neyrey’s efforts have helped placed numerous children in homes with a safe and supportive environment.
