CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three Duke Energy employees were honored today with the company’s Environment, Health and Safety Award. The award is given annually – recognizing individual efforts in protecting and creating a safe working atmosphere throughout the company.

Honored were:

Personally championing waste management within DEGT, Emilio de Cardenas and his group achieved savings of more than $1 million in 2000. His environmental outreach programs have furthered the company’s image as a leading environmental steward. de Cardenas’ participation in the Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership helped the company win the Coastal America’s 2000 Partnership Award for outstanding contribution to the restoration and protection of coastal environment.

Turning the tide against a number of safety incidents that occurred in 1996 and 1997, Jim Lancaster has created a winning safety record in recent times in Duke Power’s Southern region. As head of the region’s Safety Steering Team, Lancaster has helped the region’s 400 employees log one million accident-free work hours, and go one year without a recordable injury.

Jim Short was a leading advocate of Crescent Resources establishing conservation easements along about 200 miles of streams and rivers on the Catawba River in North Carolina and South Carolina. Crescent also pledged $500,000 to assist landowners in the protection of their stream corridors, which will protect an additional 100 miles of stream along the Catawba River.
