Point Tupper Lateral Pipeline Ready for Service

Halifax, Nova Scotia - The Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline (M&NP) Point Tupper Lateral is now ready to deliver natural gas to customers in Point Tupper. The lateral was placed in service June 30, 2001.

Following construction of the pressure reducing station for the Point Tupper Lateral, M&NP was granted final Leave-to-Open by the National Energy Board (NEB) on June 27, 2001. Final commissioning of the facilities took place over the past three weeks and the lateral was filled with natural gas and brought up to normal operating pressures immediately upon receiving the final Leave-to-Open.

"We are pleased to take this final step toward serving our customers in Point Tupper. This demonstrates our continued commitment to the development of the Maritime market," said Phillip Knoll, president of M&NP. "It is yet another milestone towards our target of establishing a 2 billion cubic feet / day system by 2010 serving markets in the Maritimes, Eastern Canada, and New England."

The Point Tupper Lateral is approximately 60 kilometers in length and extends from the M&NP mainline to Point Tupper, Nova Scotia. M&NP closed the purchase of the Point Tupper lateral from Sable Offshore Energy Inc. on June 22nd, 2001.

The lateral will operate under conditions approved by the NEB on August 10th, 2000 and will serve the Sable fractionation plant, StoraEnso and CGC, Inc. in Point Tupper. M&NP will now work with customers to bring their facilities into service.

M&NP operates a fully expandable transmission pipeline system serving markets in the Maritimes and New England. System expansions to further serve these markets will result in decreased transportation rates, enhancing the competitiveness of Scotian Shelf natural gas in relation to other supply basins in North America.

The project partners of Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline are Westcoast Energy Inc. (37.5%); Duke Energy (37.5%); ExxonMobil Canada (12.5%); and Emera Inc. (12.5%). M&NP is headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia with operations offices in Fredericton, New Brunswick and Stellarton, Nova Scotia.
