CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Engineering & Services has been awarded a contract to be one of three engineering services providers to six nuclear power plants operated by Nuclear Management Co. LLC (NMC). The contract period is through Dec. 31, 2003, with a two-year extension option. The contract amount is not being disclosed.

NMC is a limited liability company jointly owned by Xcel Energy, Alliant Energy, Wisconsin Electric Power Co. and Wisconsin Public Service and Consumers Energy. The NMC fleet includes Duane Arnold, Kewaunee, Monticello, Palisades, Point Beach and Prairie Island.

"Our commitment to NMC and the nuclear power industry is strong," said Bobby Abrams, Duke Engineering executive vice president. "We offer an owner-operator perspective that we think makes us stand out as an engineering services provider in this industry. By sharing our insight and specialized engineering capability garnered over more than three decades of experience, we offer solutions that consistently result in more efficient and reliable plant operations for our clients," said Abrams.

Among Duke Engineering's successful projects at NMC-operated plants was the removal and replacement of Point Beach's unit 2 steam generators, completed ahead of schedule in 1997 while meeting all safety, radiological and quality goals. Duke Engineering teams with the Washington Group Inc. to form the Steam Generating Team (SGT) LLC, which specializes in steam generator replacement projects. SGT recently was awarded a contract to replace steam generators at Prairie Island.
