DUKE ENERGY WORKING TO RETURN MOSS LANDING POWER PLANT TO SERVICE

Duke Energy is investigating the cause of an unscheduled outage at its Moss Landing Power Plant Unit 7 this morning. All other available Duke Energy units in California are operating.

"Moss Landing employees are working feverishly around the clock to return the unit to service by this weekend," said Bill Hall, DENA vice president of asset management for the Western region.

Moss Landing unit 7 has had a solid record of operation leading up to this event with a 77 percent capacity factor in 2000, the third highest since the plant began operation more than 30 years ago. Also during 2000, the unit generated approximately 5 million megawatt-hours. As a group, Duke Energy’s California power plants generated approximately 17 million megawatt- hours in 2000 as compared to approximately 9.5 million megawatt-hours in 1999.

Moss Landing unit 6 is currently shut down for a scheduled $25 million outage to install emissions control equipment as required by California regulations. The outages will not impact the modernization work underway to expand the capacity at Moss Landing by 1,060 megawatts as part of Duke Energy’s efforts to help ease the California energy crisis.

Built in the late 1960s, Moss Landing units 6 and 7 are each capable of generating 750 megawatts. For more information about Duke Energy’s California operations visit www.duke-energy.com/California.
