CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Thomas (Tom) O’Connor, senior vice president of marketing and capacity management for Duke Energy Gas Transmission, was presented a 1999 Pinnacle Award today by Duke Energy Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Richard B. Priory in ceremonies at the Charlotte Convention Center. The Pinnacle Award annually recognizes Duke Energy employees for outstanding contributions to the company’s business success.

O’Connor developed and coordinated the construction of the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline, a 650-mile natural gas transmission system that links supply from offshore Nova Scotia with growing markets in the northeastern United States and Canadian Maritimes region. Duke Energy is a 37.5 percent owner of Maritimes & Northeast and serves as the operator of the U.S. portion of the pipeline.

The Maritimes & Northeast system was constructed through environmentally sensitive areas on both sides of the U.S./Canadian border where no other natural gas pipelines existed. Throughout the five-year span of planning and construction, O’Connor cultivated and produced positive relationships with all stakeholders, instilling in them a vision of "what could be" by bringing this important infrastructure to their areas.

Upon its completion and initial natural gas delivery in December 1999, Maritimes & Northeast marked the first time in more than 20 years that a major new supply basin was brought to market in North America. Constructed in an environmentally sound manner, the project has received accolades from Govs. King of Maine and Cellucci of Massachusetts for its economic and environmental benefits.

Duke Energy, a diversified multinational energy company, creates value for customers and shareholders through an integrated network of energy assets and expertise. Duke Energy manages a dynamic portfolio of natural gas and electric supply, delivery and trading businesses -- generating revenues of nearly $22 billion in 1999.
